The Bob and Bill Mitchell Scholarship was established by Mrs. Barbara Mitchell, widow of Bob and sister-in-law of Bill. It was the wish of the brothers, as alumni, to remember the many good things of the Shidler School system. Woodard Robert (Bob) Mitchell, Jr. graduated in 1936 and served in the US Air Force. Bob retired from the Houston Post in 1983 and passed away September 15, 1999 at the age of 80. Jesse Benjamin (Bill) Mitchell entered the Marine Corp after graduating from high school in 1940. Bill died in the line of duty on December 20, 1942. This one time scholarship in the amount of $1000 is presented to an outstanding college bound senior of the Shidler School District 11. Delores Van Camp Etter,
class of 1965, contacted Shidler School's superintendent in December 1994
stating that "As a professor in electrical and computer engineering, I
understand the importance of learning mathematics, and I appreciate the
excellent foundations in mathematics that I got from Shidler School System."
In May 1995 the first Dolores Etter Math Awards were given. Mrs. Etter
awarded the top math boy and girl in each class, grades seventh through
twelfth, $100. In 1998, Mrs. Etter awarded the top math boy and girl in each
class, grades third through sixth, a $50 gift certificate from Brace Books
in Ponca City. Mrs. Etter thanks Shidler Schools for helping her encourage
students to excel in mathematics.
This award is given in memory of Janelle White, alumnus of 1982, by her
classmates. A plaque is awarded to a graduating senior girl for outstanding
achievement in leadership, scholarship and sportsmanship, through a vote of
those in attendance at the
annual Athletic Banquet. This award is still given today and is one of the
highest honors a student athlete can receive at Shidler High School.
